German Village

In the years leading up to World War II, supporters of Adolf Hitler’s rise in Germany created an organization in the United States known as the German American Bund. Chapters formed across the country, including several in Ohio.

The code change revolves around a court battle between the city and the German Village Society. The city lost a debate in court over whether it had to seek a certificate of appropriateness to do work on accessible sidewalk curb ramps.

The German Village Society wants the city to comply with a law requiring any improvements to get approval before the German Village Commission.

The German Village Society hosted a Columbus City Council candidate forum and largely asked about topics close to home. The District 7 candidates used the topics to explain how they'd govern differently from one another.

The German Village Society has sued the city of Columbus for removing historic brick sidewalks and sandstone curbs without needed certificates of appropriateness in the historic neighborhood.

Walking Distance Brewing Co., the city of Whitehall and several homes in German Village have been recent targets of anti-LGBTQ attacks.
