Columbus Police identified the man shot and killed by an officer near the corner of East 8th Avenue and North High Street early Sunday.

TaShawn Davis, 18, died from the gunshot wounds Sunday after he was shot by an officer just after 3:30 a.m. in the University District. Davis was accused of robbery after allegedly pointing a gun at two people in the area.

Police said in a news release earlier this week the officer instructed Davis to stop and put his hands up, but Davis allegedly ran from police. Officials say the unnamed police officer shot Davis an unknown number of times while chasing him.

Authorities said a firearm was discovered at the scene.

Police said they plan to release body worn camera footage of the shooting at a later date. The officer who shot Davis is a sergeant and a 14-year veteran of CPD.

Police not identifying the officer and are citing Marsy's Law, which is meant to provide protections to crime victims. This use of Marsy's Law is being challenged in the Ohio Supreme Court.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure whenever an officer's weapon is fired.
