The Mifflin Township police officer hospitalized for the past several weeks after being shot multiple times was released Monday from OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
The unnamed officer was allegedly shot by Daveonte Dixon, 21, on May 28 after the officer pulled over a car Dixon was a passenger in. A second officer was also shot, but was released from the hospital shortly after the shooting.
Police say Dixon fired a total of 15 shots, 11 of which struck the two officers.
Dixon remains hospitalized and in critical condition after he shot himself when officers found him at an apartment in Obetz. Dixon was found two days after the officers were shot.
Dixon was stopped for “acting suspiciously in the area,” after the vehicle was stopping and starting in the street and was blocking traffic.
After stopping the car, the first officer asked what the driver and Dixon were doing in the area. The officer asked both for identification, which Dixon didn’t have. The officer then asked about the smell of marijuana in the car before Dixon fled the vehicle and allegedly started firing at the officers.
Eight people were charged last week for helping Dixon evade police.
