Daveonte Dixon, the suspect who allegedly shot two Mifflin Township Police officers Wednesday evening, is in custody.
Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge #9 President Brian Steel said Dixon, 21, was captured by police on Friday. Steel said Dixon was found on Columbus' south side by a joint task force.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, authorities executed a search warrant at an apartment in the 4300 block of Thelma Drive in Obetz. As officers arrived and were preparing to search the apartment, they heard gunfire inside the apartment.
Members of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office SWAT team entered the apartment and found Dixon suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Dixon was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition. None of the officers' weapons were discharged while trying to arrest Dixon.
One of the officers who was shot is still in the hospital recovering after undergoing two surgeries. The other officer has been discharged from the hospital.
Body worn camera footage that the Franklin County Sheriff's Office presented to the media on Thursday showed the shooting in a residential area near the intersection of Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue. A man who was identified as Dixon exited a vehicle and ran. Dixon was a passenger in the vehicle.
In the video, the man fell down while running away before getting up and firing at the officers before fleeing.
One of the two officers collapsed on the ground as shots continued to ring out. The second officer was also shot, but was able to radio for assistance.
Officials say after Dixon allegedly shot the officers, he fled the scene. Police said Dixon evaded more than 100 officers from multiple agencies who responded to the shooting.
It is not clear why the unidentified police officers pulled over the car that Dixon had been riding in. The driver of the vehicle has been cooperating with police.
The FBI, the FOP and the Central Ohio Crimestoppers offered a combined reward of $40,000 for information on Dixon's capture.
