When Beth Armstrong started working at the Columbus Zoo in the 1970s, state-of-the-art captive animal habitats were sparse and draconian.
Zoo managers had not yet learned the importance of creating facsimiles of natural habitats, with enriching details instead of stultifying boredom. Nor was the bonds between animals and humans fully appreciated.
Armstrong rose in the ranks from part-timer to head keeper of the gorillas. She went on to champion conservation and continues to promote the role of zoos in protecting great ape species in the wild.
