Wednesday was the filing deadline for candidates in many of this year’s suburban primary elections in Cuyahoga County. East Cleveland may be the site of one of the more contested races this year. Five Democrats have filed petitions to challenge Mayor Brandon King in the September partisan primary. Another filed with the Green Party. Three people filed to run for mayor in Solon, and two in Bay Village. Both cities have open mayoral seats this time around.

Since 19-62, a local group has promoted an instrument that almost became extinct decades ago - the theatre pipe organ. The Western Reserve Theater Organ Society recently welcomed national pipe organ expert - Pierre Fracalanza - to perform a concert of popular and light classical music on the Wurlitzer Theater Pipe Organ at the Cleveland Masonic Auditorium Performing Arts Center. Fracalanza is a highly regarded pianist and organist who has been associated with the finest instrument manufacturers.

Mayor Andrew Ginther says the city will continue to "compete hard" for the business, Governor John Kasich said the state will see what it can do to help Columbus land the final bid.

A Brooklyn man was sentenced to life in prison for his 2016 suicide attempt that resulted instead in him killing a 20-year-old college student. Mark Rafter, 50, had been driving at high speeds the wrong way down Interstate 480 when he struck and killed another driver, Kayla FCoates. Cleveland.com reports Coates' mother, Julie, told the court that Rafter should be made to view Kayla's photograph every anniversary of her daughter's death. An earlier report had misidentified Kayla Coates as Julie.

The Ohio Department of Health is raising its flu-activity level to “widespread,” the agency’s highest ranking. From the start of October through Dec. 9, 401 people have been hospitalized with symptoms associated with influenza, according to ODH. In the most recent week numbers are available, 144 people went to the hospital with the flu.

Noa Even, saxophone, and composer Frank Wiley co-direct the New Music programming at Kent State University. They spoke with ideastream’s Bill O’Connell about making sure their students learn that there is more to being a classical musician in the 21st century than just mastering an instrument. The Mamai Theatre Company announced this week that it’s ceasing operations at the end of the year. The surprise announcement comes seven years after its founding, just after its first season in Playhouse Square. A Facebook post on Aug. 28th by the company’s two artistic directors included the line ‘stay tuned for a 2018 season announcement.’ According to board president David Schiopota, the recent departure of one of the artistic directors, Bernadette Clemens, led to the decision to close down.
