Ohio State employee killed in Clintonville stabbing, victim's adopted son ID'd as suspect

Mark Rayburn-Velco was a senior IT project manager with Ohio State and he worked for the university for more than four years.

Columbus police say a Clintonville resident, who was also an Ohio State employee, is dead and another person was severely injured after a stabbing.

The suspect is the victim’s 17-year-old adopted son, according to officials.

The stabbing was reported on Sunday around 7 a.m. in the Glen Echo area, which is part of Columbus' Clintonville neighborhood. At the scene, officers found two victims who were stabbed.

One of the victims, 58-year-old Mark Rayburn-Velco, was pronounced dead at 7:58 a.m. The second victim was taken to a hospital and was listed as critical, but is expected to recover.

Rayburn-Velco’s son is charged with murder and felonious assault.

Rayburn-Velco was a senior IT project manager with Ohio State and he worked for the university for more than four years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in German studies prior to his employment with Ohio State.

Ohio State spokesperson Ben Johnson said in a statement, “Ohio State is mourning the loss of colleague and friend, Mark Rayburn-Velco, who passed away on Sunday, May 24. Mark was an integral member of the team at Ohio State. The university is reaching out to Mark’s co-workers to offer support services during this difficult time.”

The case remains under investigation.
