A 13-year-old Komodo dragon died earlier this month at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The zoo announced the death of Sapo Thursday on social media, though he died on Oct. 7.

Sapo was born in Los Angeles in 2010 and came to Columbus in April 2016.

The animal had been receiving treatment for severe and progressive arthritis.

Officials are waiting for test results to determine Sapo's exact cause of death.

The announcement about Sapo's death included the following statement, "...his care team remembers him as a sweet boy who had a soft and gentle demeanor and made his caregivers feel like the best trainers."
