UC East Closing, Most Classes Moving Back To Batavia

An increase in online and hybrid classes has prompted UC East to move classes back to Batavia.

An increase in online and hybrid classes has prompted UC East to move classes back to Batavia.

By next summer UC Clermont will stop leasing space at the old Ford plant and have moved most classes back to its main Batavia campus. Dean Jeff Bauer says there's more demand for online and hybrid classes so it doesn't need the space.

It was 2010 when UC first started leasing space in the vacant plant on St. Rt. 32. At the time, UC Clermont was at its highest enrollment and needed more space. Allied Health was on the first floor of the former Ford administration building and nursing, education and paralegal classes were on the second floor. The manufacturing program was also based at UC East.

The original five-year lease was extended to 2020.

But now the space isn't needed. "It became very obvious to us that the technology changes and the changes in the market, what students wanted - both the traditional and non-traditional age students - was putting us into a position where we were having lots of extra space in our 'main campus' on the hill in Batavia," Bauer says.

Both the physical and respiratory therapy programs have moved back to Batavia. Surgical technology is scheduled to relocate in December.

The manufacturing program will find a new home and that will be announced later this month.
