Rep. Joyce Beatty and Democratic officials across the country are holding forums to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Social Security even as the agency faces staffing cuts.

Columbus Congresswoman Joyce Beatty said she intends to run for office in 2026 after hip replacement and eye surgery sidelined her for weeks. Beatty returned to Washington D.C. last week to vote against President Donald Trump's tax cut and spending bill.

All four Republicans representing districts that are in Franklin County or directly border it voted in favor of cutting $1.1 billion from public media. Democratic U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty missed the very narrow vote.

Beatty's appointment was announced during Monday night's city council meeting.

Like every Democratic congress member, Beatty has stood behind Hakeem Jeffries of New York in each of the votes for U.S. House speaker since the representatives dismissed Kevin McCarthy from the role.

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce endorsed statewide Issue 1 while Beatty opposes the measure. Beatty's campaign claimed in a letter the PAC failed to disclose the nature of the event to the campaign.
