The pandemic brought schools to the center of ongoing public health debates over masks and vaccine mandates. And concern over critical race theory has forced schools to consider how to teach America’s complex racial history

All of this has brought the formerly dull races for local school boards to the front of many parents' minds and in 2021 there are twice as many candidates seeking a spot on their local school board compared to four years ago.
