Drummer Bob McKee, who was a key player in the Cleveland jazz scene for more than half of a century, passed away Wednesday at 90. McKee played in both the house band at the Theatrical Restaurant as well for the Mike Douglas Show, when the television program was produced in Cleveland in the early 1960s. McKee also taught his instrument to several generations of drummers. The McKee family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00-4:30 pm at Busch Funeral Home in Parma.

A Brooklyn man was sentenced to life in prison for his 2016 suicide attempt that resulted instead in him killing a 20-year-old college student. Mark Rafter, 50, had been driving at high speeds the wrong way down Interstate 480 when he struck and killed another driver, Kayla FCoates. Cleveland.com reports Coates' mother, Julie, told the court that Rafter should be made to view Kayla's photograph every anniversary of her daughter's death. An earlier report had misidentified Kayla Coates as Julie.

The Ohio Department of Health is raising its flu-activity level to “widespread,” the agency’s highest ranking. From the start of October through Dec. 9, 401 people have been hospitalized with symptoms associated with influenza, according to ODH.
