Columbus City Schools' officials say a student brought a gun to Dominion Middle School, prompting a lockdown Wednesday morning.
District spokesperson Michael Brown said a student tip led the district and police to lockdown the school between 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. and search a student's backpack inside a locker, where a gun was found.
According to Brown, the student who allegedly brought the gun into the school fled the scene.
Brown also said there was no known threat made against the school. He didn't say what type of gun was found.
He said possible charges and discipline for the student haven't been determined.
Brown said the scene has been cleared.
Principal Kate Dominique said in an email to school families an all-clear was issued at 10:15 a.m. and the lockdown was lifted.
Dominique wrote the student involved will face consequences in accordance with district policies.
"Incidents like this can cause concern. We encourage you to have an age-appropriate conversation with your student about the serious consequences of bringing prohibited items to school. Reinforce the importance of making safe decisions and speaking up if they see something concerning," Dominique wrote.
Brown said CCS middle schools do not have metal detectors, but the schools are chosen randomly throughout the year for security checks with handheld detectors.
A Columbus police spokesperson said an additional update will be provided on Wednesday.
