The Delaware man arrested earlier this month who allegedly had several loaded guns near John Glenn Columbus International Airport now faces a federal firearms charge.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Tuesday that William Griffith III, 40, is charged with illegally possessing ammunition as a convicted felon.

Police responded to a 911 call around 4 a.m. on Jan. 9 about a man trespassing in an airport construction area.

Officers found an AK-style rifle, shortened shotgun and two handguns, as well as several rounds of ammunition.

Griffith was wearing military-style fatigue trousers when he was arrested. Body armor and a ballistic helmet were also found nearby.

Griffith was convicted of kidnapping in 2011 and is prohibited from possessing guns and ammunition.

He appeared in federal court on Tuesday.
