Wearing masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, elementary school students line up to enter school for the first day of classes in Richardson, Texas, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021.

Columbus City Schools will be updating its COVID-19 mitigation and safety protocols regarding masking in school buildings and on school busses. Beginning Tuesday, March 8, the school district will lift its mask mandate, making wearing face masks in CCS buildings and busses optional.

Columbus City Schools said in a statement that this decision is in line with local public health decisions and updated recommendations from the CDC.

“For the past two years, masks have been part of the educational experience for Columbus City Schools students and staff, as we have navigated the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic,” said Superintendent/CEO Dr. Talisa Dixon.

“I did not take this decision lightly. Throughout the pandemic, our priority has been the health and safety of our students and staff. We will continue to follow our many other mitigation strategies and health protocols while allowing our families and staff to make the best choice for themselves when it comes to masking. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 data and consult with our health experts to determine if we need to reinstate a mask mandate in the future,” said Dixon.
