Rumpke Waste & Recycling announced Tuesday its plans to build a $50 million recycling center in Columbus.
The 200,000 square foot facility will be located on Joyce Avenue. According to the company, it will be the fifth-largest and most technologically advanced recycling facility in North America.
"The Rumpke Recycling Resource Center will ensure recycling capacity to serve the long-term needs as the region grows to over 3 million in population throughout the next 20 years," said Andrew Rumpke, the company's area president.
The company said its current recycling center in Columbus can process 30 tons of material per hour. The new facility will be able to recycle 50 tons per hour.
Andrew Rumpke said the new facility will bring with it several high-tech jobs.
"60 of our Rumpke employees will operate state-of-the-art technology that includes robotics, optical scanners and ballistic separators," Rumpke said.
"Along with the technology, the Rumpke team will separate the recyclable materials to be delivered to our recycling end-users who will convert them into new consumer products," he said.
Rumpke’s new recycling campus will be built over the next two years and is targeted to open in the first quarter of 2024.
