The cancer research fundraiser Pelotonia is making big changes this year because of the coronavirus.

Pelotonia president and CEO Doug Ulman says in a YouTube video posted Tuesday that they're moving from a mass bicycle ride in August to a more-personal approaching starting June 2.

“We’re excited to launch our new platform: My Pelotonia,” Ulman said.

Participants will use a mobile app to post personal challenges and fundraising goals.

“This year Pelotonia will include more engagement, more activities, and more ways to participate,” Ulman says.

Ulman says they will still celebrate August 7 with a live broadcast instead of the traditional opening ceremonies.

The registration fee for this year’s fundraiser has been waived. People who’ve already paid for 2020 event can have that money directed to cancer research or have it used for the 2021 event.

The deadline to raise money has also been extended to October 31 and there will not be an age requirement for this year’s event.
