Ohio State's Athletics Department announced Friday that Patrick Klein has resigned from his position as associate head coach of the women's basketball team.
"Ohio State is investigating allegations of violations of NCAA rules and university policy within the women’s basketball program," reads a department statement.
Klein was placed on leave July 26 while the university investigated. His resignation letter is dated Friday, Aug. 2.
"It has come to my attention that some of my actions as a coach have not adhered strictly to NCAA rules," Klein wrote in his letter. "I've also been made aware that in some instances, my communications with some student-athletes may have been too informal or in some cases even inappropriate."
Klein also wrote a letter of resignation to the iBelieve Foundation, a group that teaches leadership skills to Appalachian youth. Klein was a member of the board.
"For personal reasons, it's time for me to step away from the Foundation, focus on my family, and reflect on the next chapter of my life," he says in a letter to the iBelieve board.
An Ohio State University spokesman says the university notified NCAA about its investigation on July 29.
Klein has been assistant coach on the team for eight years.
His resignation is effective immediately.
