Columbus police say a 15-year-old girl is dead and a 14-year-old boy injured after a shooting on the South Side early Thursday morning.

Police say Shamya Saultz died from the shooting inside an apartment on West Welch Avenue just after midnight.

“Initial witness accounts point to a single, unknown suspect, wearing all black who entered the residence and opened fire on a gathering of family and friends at the residence, striking the two victims,” a police release said.

Police say the male victim was listed in stable condition.

William Boyer lives on Welch Ave. He just moved to the South Side a couple of months ago.

"It is something you know you have to be aware about, especially kind of you know in different parts of town," Boyer says. "But it is scary and something that you just have to be aware of."

He says his sense of caution is heightened after the shooting.

"But you know just being so close in proximity, it is something you just have to become aware of and take measure to make sure you’re safe," Boyer says.

The shooting follows the recent killing of Jaykwon Sharp, 14, in an East Columbus shooting. That shooting also injured a 14-year-old girl. A 13-year-old suspect was arrested days later.
