Officials with Columbus’ new Arena Football League team are looking for a new mascot, and they’re only asking women to apply.

A press release says a "female humanized mascot" named Captain Destroyer will resemble a warrior with superhero-like qualities, and still possess “family friendly and approachable attributes that fall in line with the core values of the Destroyers organization.”

A press release says details on Captain Destroyer’s costume will be announced later.

Women interested in trying out for the job can go to an event March 30 at Bo Jackson’s Elite Sports at 4696 Cosgray Road in Hilliard.

The Arena Football League recently awarded Columbus its own franchise, more than a decade after it stopped playing here. Columbus' last Arena Football League team, also named the Destroyers, started in 2003 and reached the league’s championship game in 2007. The team disbanded after the 2008 season when the Arena Football League filed for bankruptcy.

This is the third time the Arena Football League has had a team in Columbus. The Columbus Thunderbolts went 0-10 during the 1991 season while playing at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum. The Thunderbolts moved to Cleveland after just one season.

The Destroyers start play April 27, and their first home game is May 18 inside Nationwide Arena.
