The late September heat wave engulfing the Midwest and a lack of air conditioning in many district buildings are pushing Columbus City Schools officials to send students home early on Monday.

The district says middle and high schools will release at noon on Monday. Elementary schools will send students home at 1 pm.

Buildings that have students in kindergarten through sixth or eighth grade will release at 1.

All athletic contests, practices, and other extra-curricular activities have also been canceled.

The decision was announced on Sunday when forecasts predicted Monday would bring the third-straight day with temperatures above 90 degrees.

The district has not announced plans for Tuesday, when high temperatures are once again expected to be near 90.
