OHSAA Approves New Contact Rules For High School Football

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has adopted measures placing limits on full-contact drills during football practices in the hopes of reducing the risk of concussions.

The association's board of directors unanimously approved the changes Monday. The measures were recommended by the National Federation of State High School Associations' concussion task force.

Under the guidelines, full-contact is allowed after a five-day adjustment period during preseason practice and is only permitted during one session of two-a-day preseason practices to give players recovery time.

The changes also limit players to 30 minutes of full-contact practice per day and 60 minutes per week during the regular season.

OHSAA Commissioner Dan Ross says it's incumbent on coaches to monitor student-athletes' contact in practice.
