A Miami Valley resident is bringing home a bronze medal from the Rio Olympic Games.
21-year-old Clayton Murphy of New Madison in Darke County ran the 800 meter race in one minute, 42.93 seconds Monday night.
Murphy is a 2013 graduate of Tri-village High school and ran for three seasons at Akron University.
Tri-Village Athletic Director, Brad Gray, says there was quite a celebration after Murphy’s finish in the race. Hundreds of students, teachers and residents gathered in the Tri-Village High gymnasium on Monday night to watch the race.
“Right now, it’s a obviously a very exciting time," Gray said. "The community is completely excited for the kid, seeing his hard work and the amount of success that he’s had, not only locally but as a high school athlete and then at the collegiate level nationally but now on the global scale at the Olympic games is something that’s just overwhelming.”
Murphy finished 2nd in the semi-final on Saturday night before running a personal best Monday, claiming the bronze medal in the finals.
