City of Dayton To Place Income Tax Hike On Fall Ballot

The city of Dayton is moving forward with plans to put a tax hike on the November ballot.

City commissioners voted yesterday to place a new 8 year levy on the ballot that would raise city income taxes by .25 percent.  That would bring Dayton’s tax rate up to 2.5 percent, making it one of the highest rates in the Miami Valley. The hike would generate more than $10 million annually. City officials say the bulk of that funding would go toward subsidizing preschool for 4 year olds in Dayton. It would also allow the city to hire 20 more police officers, and provide street and park maintenance.

Under the proposed rate, a worker making 40,000 a year would pay an extra $100 in taxes annually.

City officials say Dayton’s revenue has not changed since 1998.
