Rhonda Corr has been named the new superintendent of Dayton Public Schools.
Corr previously worked as an area superintendent in Chicago and Indianapolis Public Schools. She began her career as a Spanish teacher in Cleveland.“Look at the data: our kids are not learning," said Corr in last week's public forum with DPS parents. "I am here because I have done the work in Chicago. I walked into Chicago and we turned around the schools quickly”
Corr said 34 of the 35 schools she oversaw improved in one year. As Dayton superintendent, Corr said she’d work to improve third grade literacy rates and increase professional development opportunities for teachers. She also said she plans to take a more personal approach to the position.
“You will not find me sitting in a central office," said Corr. "You will find me out in the schools, not in 'gotcha' manner, but in a way that I can support and coach our principals and our teachers and make sure we are meeting the needs of all of our children.”
Corr replaces Lori Ward, who stepped down due to a contract dispute. During her 6 year tenure, graduation rates improved but test scores flat-lined. The district now faces state takeover if performance does not improve by 2018.
Corr’s contract begins July 1.
