On today’s WYSO Weekend, Alex Heckman with Dayton History is back to tell us about this year's Wright at Home open house at Hawthorn Hill. Joining us in the interview is Steve Wright, the great-grandnephew of Orville and Wilbur Wright. He’ll give us a little more insight into his famous ancestors. We’ll also talk to Tim Kambitsch—director of the Dayton Public Library about next week’s grand-opening of the new Northwest branch. - Women’s Voices from Dayton Correctional Institution: Melody Williams is serving life without parole. Because of the severity of her crime she was sent to a supermax/maximum security facility, and spent the first year and a half of her sentence in lock-down.In this audio story, Melody talks to fellow Dayton Correctional Institution resident Shannon Evans about coming to prison and how she coped with being locked up for 21 hours a day.
- Photojournalist Larry C. Price has won two Pulitzer Prizes and an Emmy, and some of his most powerful work is just being processed now. Price lives in Dayton, and from here, he travels the globe, capturing images of child laborers and toxic pollution for national outlets, including the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and PBS New Hour. - On April 24th Dayton History will hold it’s highly anticipated annual Wright at Home open house at Hawthorn Hill. The hilltop Oakwood mansion has been wonderfully preserved and this past week we had the honor of touring the home with Alex Heckman—Outreach Coordinator for Dayton History. Adding to that honor and providing some more intimate details on his ancestors, Steve Wright, the great-grandnephew of Orville and Wilbur Wright. Alex Heckman speaks first on the home’s history.
- On Miami Valley StoryCorps we bring you conversations between local people who visited the StoryCorps booth in Dayton in 2014. Today we meet Yasmeen Allen and her husband Mitchell Allen. They talked about their family, their relationship, and their first blind date.
- On Saturday, April 23rd, Dayton Metro Library system will open to the public the new Northwest branch, which made possible when voters said yes a 2012 bond issue. Located at the corner of Philadelphia Drive and Hillcrest Avenue - where Fairview High School once stood, the library will serve as a cultural center while still delivering the services of libraries long past. I toured the new facility with Tim Kambitsch, executive director of Dayton Public libraries. We talked about the new amenities offered and the libraries mission upgrade.
