Middletown's Hope House Mission is finally moving forward with a new shelter. The organization broke ground Wednesday on the $11.2 million facility.
The new building about a mile from the current one will have 50 emergency shelter beds and 30 one-bedroom permanent supportive housing apartments.
Executive Director Tim Williams says the apartments are designed to help people with chronic homelessness issues transition to permanent housing.
"It gives them a safe and secure environment," Williams says. "The tools they have learned from our shelter, hopefully they'll be empowered to use those skills while they're there, and they'll continue on with case management and counseling and a lot of the same services that they received in the shelter will be available to them in the apartment."
There are also plans for counseling, health and administrative offices along with a commercial kitchen and dining room.
Hope House says the current building lacks space and amenities. "This move will allow us to serve more individuals and serve them better with new facilities designed to promote life transformation," the organization adds.
The new facility is expected to be ready by the end of 2019.
