Sony Pictures Entertainment has posted a trailer for Gillian Anderson's "UFO" movie, which flew under the radar when filmed here last December.

Anderson, "The X-Files" star, plays a mathematics professor in scenes filmed at the University of Cincinnati who helps a young man (Tony-winner Alex Sharp) investigating extraterrestrial sightings.

The cast includes Oscar-nominee David Strathairn from George Clooney's "Good Night, and Good Luck" (and "Lincoln," "L.A. Confidential," "The Sopranos," "The Blacklist"); Ella Purnell ("Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children," "Kick-Ass 2"); Benjamin Beatty ("Hail, Caesar!"); Denise Barone ("Gotti," "The Old Man & the Gun"); and Carly Tamborski ("House of Cards," "Empire," "Miles Ahead").

Ryan Eslinger ("Daniel and Abraham," "Madness and Genius") directed from his script. "UFO" debuts on digital and DVD Sept. 4.

Here's the plot synopsis, posted on the Internet Movie Database  by Sony Pictures Entertainment:

"Derek (Alex Sharp) a brilliant college student, haunted by a childhood UFO sighting, believes that mysterious sightings reported at multiple airports across the United States are UFOs. With the help of his girlfriend, Natalie (Ella Purnell), and his advanced mathematics professor, Dr. Hendricks (X-Files' Gillian Anderson), Derek races to unravel the mystery with FBI special agent Franklin Ahls (David Strathairn) on his heels."

Syfywire says the film is "billed as an edge-of-your-seat thriller, and judging by the trailer it looks like a fun ride, as well as diving deep into UFO mythology — particularly with Anderson’s character on hand to do the math."

The trailer includes scenes shot at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, UC and the University Heights skyline.

"UFO" is the third film shot in Cincinnati for Strathairn, who also appeared in "Eight Men Out" (1988) about gamblers arranging for the Chicago White Sox to throw the 1919 World Series to the Reds, and "Lost in Yonkers (1993) starring Richard Dreyfuss and Mercedes Ruehl.
