Dogs make great companions as pets, but can go beyond that by providing a wide range of assistance as service animals to those who are disabled. They can help individuals with visual and hearing impairments, mobility problems, diabetes, seizure disorder and mental illnesses. This not only increases independence, but also creates loving companionships between the dogs and those who use them.
Here to talk about service dogs and how they help individuals physically, mentally and emotionally, are development director for 4 Paws for Ability, Inc., Kelly Camm; parent of a child who uses a 4 Paws for Ability service dog, Beverly Wallrauth; executive director for Canine Companions for Independence, Megan Koester; parent of a child who uses a Canine Companions for Independence service dog, Kurt Feldmann; and Canine Companions for Independence Graduate Jake Jacobsen.
