Northern Kentucky hasn't had a road construction worker killed in a work zone since 2003; and the Kentucky Transportation Department would like to keep it that way.
As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, Chief District Engineer for District 6 Rob Hans is reminding drivers to be extra cautious in construction areas.
"We've had in the past 50 years, four fatalities in the District 6 area - the 11 Northern Kentucky counties," Hans says. "Across the state of Kentucky we've had 93 fatalities, which is 93 too many."
The number of people killed in Ohio in work zones last year nearly doubled from the year before - 30, compared to 17 in 2014.
Both states are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert, and be patient. Hans says that'll be especially important and Kentucky resurfaces Northbound 71/75 this summer.
"From the 275 interchange going north to just south of the Dixie Highway interchange, it's about two miles of interstate rehabilitation. We will be completely replacing all lanes of the pavement and replacing it with new concrete."
Hans says the project will last all summer, wrapping up in late Fall. Other major projects include street widening and realignment on Kentucky 9, and construction of a connector road near NKU.
