Grammy-Winning ‘Birdman’ Movie Composer Here March 12-13

 Drummer-composer Antonio Sanchez, who won a Grammy Award Monday for the “Birdman” movie score, will talk about the film at the Esquire Theatre before performing at the Xavier University Jazz Series next month.

At 7:30 p.m. Saturday March 12,Sanchez will introduce a special screening of “Birdman or (The UnexpectedVirtueof Ignorance)” at the EsquireTheatrein Clifton. “Birdman,” starring Michael Keaton and Edward Norton, elevated Sanchez’s profile by winning Academy Awards for best picture, directing, original screenplay and cinematography.

Sanchez waited a year to be honored for the soundtrack. He won a Grammy Award Monday, after being  disqualified from the Academy Awards last year because the soundtrack included “pre-existing” classical music.

At 3 p.m. Sunday March 13, Sanchez and his band Migration make their debut during the 40th anniversary season of Xavier’s music series in Gallagher Theater on the Xavier campus. Sanchez, Seamus Blake (tenor saxophone and electronic wind instruments), John Escreet (keyboards) and Matt Brewer (acoustic and electric bass) will perform selections from their “Meridian Suite” album.

At 6 p.m. Sunday March 13, Sanchez will conduct a master class  in Gallagher Theater following his concert.

On Monday, March 14,Sanchez will do another master class at 11:30 a.m. at the School for Creative & Performing Arts. 

Sanchez, 44, won three Grammys for albums recorded with legendary guitarist Pat Metheny. He’s also performed with jazz greats Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Charlie Haden and Michael Brecker.

His “Birdman” score won top prize from the Broadcast Film Critics Association, Hollywood Music in Media Awards and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society.
