The federal government will pay to upgrade existing transmission lines. The funds will also be matched by private investment.

AEP said in a statement it can now provide utility bill relief to about 2,600 people for every $1 million. With $8.4 million in funding from five data center companies, that means only 21,000 Ohioans would qualify.

CEO Bill Fehrman said in an earnings call this week that AEP will generate 63 gigawatts nationally by 2030. The company currently generates only 32 gigawatts of power across 11 states.

In July, American Electric Power got the green light from the state regulatory body the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to move forward with its data center tariff.

Columbus Stand Up, Common Cause Ohio and other groups are opposing a revenue increase for central Ohio's largest utility company.

If rate increases are approved, an average customer can expect to pay an extra $36 a month by 2027 if they use American Electric Power of Ohio, Columbia Gas of Ohio and Columbus Water.
