Ohio University fired head football coach Brian Smith, after placing him on leave two weeks ago without an explaination.

The university said in a statement that Smith was fired for cause for violating the terms of his employment agreement by engaging in serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the university.

The university didn't elaborate further on why Smith was fired.

This year was Smith's first season as the Bobcats' head coach, leading them to an 8-4 record. Ohio University is set to play in the Frisco Bowl against the University of Nevada Las Vegas on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

The team will be coached by interim head coach and defensive coordinator John Hauser.

The university said a search for a permanent football head coach will begin immediately.
