Watch A Father-Child Jazz Violin Duo Take On Bach

Jennifer Hambrick (right), of Classical 101, recently interviewed jazz violionists Camille Vogley-Howes and her father, Christian Howes, when they performed in our studios.

It's always a good time in the Classical 101 studios — but it was an especially good time recently when things here got a little jazzy.

Actually, more than a little.

Central Ohio native and internationally renowned jazz violinist Christian Howes and his child, Quartet Davis violinist Camille Vogley-Howes, joined me in the Classical 101 studios Friday to perform improvisations together and to chat about some exciting upcoming events.

This week, July 1 to 7, Howes is leading the 16th season of his Creative Strings Workshop in Columbus and Delaware.

The workshop teaches young instrumentalists how to do jazz improvisation and gives them opportunities to perform in nontraditional venues. Workshop students will present more than 50 concerts around Central Ohio this week.

Watch this video to hear the Howes duo improvise on jazz standards and classical repertoire — an improvisation on a Bach fugue! — and to learn the answer to an age-old question: Can anyone, just anyone, really learn to improvise?

The answer might surprise you!
