More than 170 cities across the country have thousands of microphones embedded around town listening for the sound of one thing: gunshots.

In Columbus, city officials and law enforcement consider its gunshot detection technology, known as Shotspotter, to be a vital tool, spending nearly $1 million to cover a dozen miles.
