What's the current status of 'separation of church and state' in the US?

The First Amendment enshrines the idea of separation between church and state within the U.S.

However, with recent Supreme Court rulings and the co-opting of “Christian thinking” into some American policies, is the separation still intact?

What are the downsides and the upsides of separating church and state, and is it something that should still be enshrined in the Constitution?
