The publishing landscape can be rough terrain for new authors, self-published writers and the legions who aren’t household names.

Recent examples of author scams abound.

Earlier this year, the Justice Department charged three people behind a company called PageTurner with allegedly cheating more than 800 authors out of $44 million.
