Incarcerated and pregnant

Linda Acoff was 17 weeks pregnant and pleading for help, but an investigation found Cuyahoga County Jail staff delayed proper medical care. An autopsy of her fetus showed she lost her pregnancy due to a common infection that went untreated.

The Marshall Project and News 5 Cleveland investigate the lack of adequate healthcare for pregnant women in Ohio jails. There are no reporting standards for miscarriages or stillbirths in jail. A Democratic lawmaker wants to change that.

When a woman in the Cuyahoga County Jail lost a pregnancy before 20 weeks, it was ruled a stillbirth, but one jail official said it didn’t need to be reported because “the fetus the inmate was carrying was not incarcerated.”
