Mary Lou Retton rose to gold-medal winning prominence during the 1984 summer Olympic Games.

She was the epitome of youth and fitness in the 1980’s. That’s why it came as a shock when it was revealed recently that she was hospitalized and fighting for her life.

The cause was pneumonia. The illness can turn severe. It’s also one of the most common reasons for hospitalization.
