New book examines the legacy of Ohio-born president James Garfield

Associated Press

This show originally aired on July 13, 2023.

Ohio native James Garfield was elected president in 1880, after nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he was the youngest lawmaker and one of the most progressive.

He confronted a number of firsts in his presidency, even though an assassin struck him down 200 days into his term.

A new book offers fresh insights into his political career, his leadership and his legacy.
