Losing our religion

Holy Rosary and St. John Catholic Church on the near east side of Columbus.
George Shillcock
Holy Rosary and St. John Catholic Church on the near east side of Columbus is one of 15 Catholic churches slated to close in Central Ohio.

This show originally aired on June 14, 2023.

The Catholic Diocese of Columbus in May moved forward with its plan to close 15 churches and consolidate others in a 23-county region.

The decision will eliminate important community resources and gathering places, especially for poor, rural and marginalized populations. Columbus is not unique and the Catholic Church is not alone.

The number of American adults identifying as non-religious has quadrupled in the past 30 years.

We explore the decline in religion and what that means for society.
