In recent years, teachers and administrators have weathered an abrupt shift to remote learning due to a pandemic, record drops in reading and math proficiency, staff shortages, and for some districts, deadly shootings.
In the aftermath, students are dealing with high levels of anxiety and depression while trying to catch up academically.
Meanwhile, some states, including Ohio, are trying to exert greater control over what teachers teach and what students can read.
Columbus City Schools, the state’s largest district with more than 45,000 students, began last school year with a three-day strike, which was its first in decades.
CCS is facing challenges similar to those of other districts and more.
Now, there’s a new leader at the helm.
We talk with CCS Superintendent Angela Chapman about the priorities and challenges heading into a new school year.
