The Terran 1 rocket, made largely of 3D-printed metal parts, launched successfully but failed to reach orbit on Wednesday.

A rocket made almost entirely of 3D-printed parts made its launch debut last week, lifting off amid fanfare but failing three minutes into flight, far short of orbit.

But it was a celebratory mood at mission control anyway, given that the rocket, known as Terran 1, met several objectives, even though the rocket fell far short of orbit.

A contentious congressional hearing last week laid bare the chief concern swirling around ByteDance subsidiary TikTok — that it’s a covert spying operation of the Chinese government.

But TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew pushed back on that narrative, saying the company has spent two years building a firewall to protect user data from foreign access, in this case, China.

Most lawmakers didn’t buy his reassurances.
