A train derailment in northeast Ohio released large amounts of toxic chemicals and forced the evacuation of thousands of people, raising concerns about the safety of hazardous material transportation and infrastructure.
Residents near the fiery scene of the East Palestine 50-car train derailment last week have been allowed to return to their homes. Concerns are mounting about the long-term health issues associated with the hazardous materials released into the air from five of those cars. Water is being monitored and residents are watching their pets with concern.
Rail is generally regarded as the safest option for most goods. Federal data show such accidents involving hazardous materials are exceedingly rare, but rail lines crisscross through the heart of nearly every city and town in the country. Even one mishap could spell disaster.
