Wellness Wednesday: Lack of diversity among mental health professionals

Demand for mental health services continues to grow across demographic groups.

But nearly 8 out of 10 of the nearly 200,000 therapists at work in the U.S. are white. And little education and training about racial and immigration issues is provided for new therapists.

That’s frustrating for people of color who are looking for help from someone who understands their identity and life experiences.

Coming up on Wellness Wednesday, the lack of diversity among mental health professionals and why it matters. We welcome Dr. Noreal Armstrong, Director of A Therapist Like Me.

Also on this Wellness Wednesday, we'll look at how the side effects of a drug developed for one medical issue can end up having a positive effect for another. Case in point, Ozempic, a drug created to treat diabetes, is being used by people to induce weight loss. We’ll address the rise in popularity of this drug and whether this alternative use is safe with Dr. Disha Narang, an endocrinologist at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.

Regular exercise is one thing. The contemporary barrage of food tips and tricks to optimize your workout is another. Alex Hutchinson, science and fitness journalist with Outside magazine shares helpful tips regarding food intake and how you can achieve your best workout.

Guests:

  • Dr. Noreal Armstrong, Director of A Therapist Like Me
