J.R. Majewski, Republican candidate for U.S. Representative for Ohio's 9th Congressional District, speaks at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio., Sept. 17, 2022.

Republicans need a net gain of five seats to seize the U.S. House majority, and the political tide is in their favor.

That’s the conventional wisdom in a midterm election year in which a democrat is in the white house: the party out of power has the edge.

But at least one chink in the GOP armor is in Ohio, where a northern Ohio district gerrymandered to hurt longtime democratic representative Marcy Kaptur has produced a problematic opponent.

The National Republican Congressional Committee canceled nearly a million dollars in television ad time for J.R. Majewski after the Associated Press reported he had misrepresented his military service.
