Pleasant Valley is a beautiful corner of Richland County, and one of the first parts of the region to be settled. Most people associate the area with the Malabar Farm estate of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Broomfield.

The valley again became well-known as the location of the Shawshank Oak, the massive tree featured in “The Shawshank Redemption.” But in 1896, Ceely Rose poisoned her entire family in a small farmhouse on the grounds of what is now Malabar Farm State Park.

Today on "All Sides Weekend: Books" with host Christopher Purdy, author Mark Sebastian Jordan discusses his new book about the murders.
