Double Standards For African American Women

A portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama in the Smithsonian Institute's National Portrait Gallery.
Smithsonian Institute

This episode originally aired on Dec. 10, 2020.

History has shown us that African American mothers and wives who embrace the values of homelife, who have felt a sense of belonging and persist in those ambitions, often attract the animus of racists.

This has been true from the time of Black enslavement to the experience of Michelle Obama as the first African-American First Lady.

Today on All Sides with Ann Fisher, Ohio State University associate professor Koritha Mitchell shares a literary historian’s review of this dynamic.
