Life In A Cleveland Steel Mill

This episode originally aired on March 9, 2020.

Eliese Goldbach never dreamt that the ArcelorMittal steel mill she passed often as a child growing up in Cleveland would one day be her workplace.

After surviving a sexual assault in college and battling mental illness, Goldbach supported herself as a house painter before joining the steelworker ranks. Donning an orange hat, she descended into one of the country’s most dangerous and deadly occupations.

Learning to make steel was just one of the lessons she learned in blue-collar America in 2016, which she recounts in her new book Rust: A Memoir Of Steel And Grit.

Today on All Sides With Ann Fisher: writer Eliese Goldbach discusses her memoir.
