Before the 1970s, emergency wards were typically staffed with junior doctors from different fields. Critical illnesses and injuries often were treated by first year resident surgeons.
Then, the specialty of emergency medicine was developed and now, textbooks, advanced training programs and treatment algorithms are in play. And that’s a good thing in the age of COVID-19.
